Chapter Twenty Three

"Aren't you glad these sewers don't function anymore?" Blane puffed as he led the way, jumping from the walkway into the drainage part of the sewer. He landed with a splash in dirty water that was ankle-deep. "When these functioned, the water would have been over our heads and full of floating lumps of-"

"Yeah, I get it. Thanks for the visual." Jayden landed next to him and they started running again. It was obvious now that they were being herded somewhere by the Wardens above them but all they could do was keep moving, hoping to get far enough ahead of their pursuers that they might escape.

"Do you think they'll have an ambush set up when we finally get to a manhole that they haven't covered?" he asked cheerfully.

So far, every escape that they had reached had held two things: an open manhole and a Warden or convict standing above it with a gun aimed their way. Though shots had been fired they seemed to be aimed at the walls, forcing them to run down certain paths.

"More than likely. I'm just wondering if they mean to capture us rather than kill us, seems like if they wanted us dead they could have achieved it already."

"What would they want with prisoners?" Blane asked, his legs felt wobbly but they couldn't afford to stop. It seemed like they had been running for hours. They probably had.

A manhole loomed ahead of them and they skirted to the side of the tunnel, expecting gunfire. When none came, Blane moved closer to it.

"It's not open," he announced. Jayden stopped, braced his arms on his knees and took three shuddering breaths.

"We might be getting ahead of them, but they probably aren't far behind. I think we should keep going. Then we can try to come out further away from them."

"Okay." Blane forced his body to move again and the splashing of their footsteps was the only noise for a while.

The tunnel started to slope downwards.

The green light from the glow stick swung wildly from side to side, illuminating the sludge-covered brickwork that made up the tunnel and the occasional rat but nothing else.

Their breaths came in sharp, panting rasps but they ran on, past one manhole then another and another until suddenly they couldn't run any further. The glow stick was fading and Blane had to squint to make out the details of the sewer around them.

A huge, metal grate spread across the tunnel ahead of them, blocking their progress and leaving the only option above them.

There was a ladder attached to the wall. It ran as high as the tunnel roof and then higher still as the brickwork above them opened up and continued skyward. At the top was a door with a wheel to open it set into the wall of the tower.

"I guess we're about to find out if it's an ambush," Jayden said as he started climbing.

Blane gave the tunnel one last, sweeping glance but there weren't any other options. They had to go up.
